None of the early progenitors of the Zionist idea, from Leon Pinsker to Ahad Ha’am to Theodor Herzl, envisioned a Jewish state, but rather a Jewish autonomous national region within a state composed of other nations as well. The idea, explicitly stated by most of these early Zionist thinkers, was to provide a model multinational state, not a nation-state and certainly not a negation of the Diaspora. If even the Zionists, those most nationalist of Jews, whose solution to the Jewish Question I reject, nonetheless were able so clearly to distinguish between nation and state, why does it now seem so impossible for so many of our contemporaries? In the next chapter the concept of the Jewish Diaspora Nation, the no-state solution, will be explored in some depth and breadth.
